Texas Medicaid and Virtual Appointments Across Texas

Understand Your Coverage Before Scheduling Online CareUploaded Image

Texas Medicaid members may be able to receive care for an appropriate non-emergency health concern without traveling to a clinic.

Virtual appointments can be especially helpful when transportation, work, family responsibilities, distance, or illness makes an office visit inconvenient. However, Texas Medicaid includes multiple programs and managed-care networks, so coverage is not identical for every member.

Visit the VirtualCare2go Texas Medicaid page and confirm your individual benefits before scheduling.

Identify Your Exact Medicaid Plan

The Texas Medicaid name or logo does not identify every detail of your coverage.

Members may receive benefits through STAR, STAR+PLUS, STAR Kids, STAR Health, Traditional Medicaid, CHIP, or another specialized program. Different managed-care organizations may have their own provider directories, virtual-care platforms, referral rules, and authorization requirements.

Review your current insurance card for:

  • Your health plan’s complete name

  • Your Medicaid program

  • Your member identification number

  • The member-services telephone number

  • Your assigned primary care provider

  • Pharmacy-benefit information

Use this information when contacting the plan. Do not rely only on the general Texas Medicaid name.

Does Texas Medicaid Cover VirtualCare2go?

VirtualCare2go lists Texas Medicaid among the insurance coverage it may accept through its billing provider. Participation can still depend on the member’s exact network, scheduled healthcare professional, appointment type, and requested service.

Before your appointment, ask the plan:

  • Is VirtualCare2go in my network?

  • Is the scheduled provider in network?

  • Are virtual urgent-care appointments covered?

  • Must I use a plan-selected telemedicine platform?

  • Do I need a referral from my PCP?

  • Is prior authorization required?

  • Will I have any member responsibility?

Write down the representative’s name, the date, and the reference number for the call.

Insurance verification is based on the information available at that time and does not guarantee claim payment.

What Can Be Evaluated Virtually?

A virtual appointment may be appropriate for stable, non-life-threatening concerns such as cold symptoms, allergies, mild cough, congestion, uncomplicated urinary symptoms, pink eye, minor rashes, headaches without emergency warning signs, or mild stomach symptoms.

The healthcare professional will review your symptoms and determine whether online evaluation is appropriate.

Virtual care cannot replace every physical examination. If the provider needs hands-on testing, imaging, specimen collection, or closer monitoring, you may be directed to an in-person facility.

How Does an Appointment Work?

Begin by scheduling an available appointment and entering your health information. You may be asked to provide your symptoms, medications, allergies, preferred pharmacy, insurance information, and photographs of the front and back of your Medicaid card.

Join the appointment from a private location using a charged phone, tablet, or computer with a working camera, microphone, and stable internet connection.

During the visit, the healthcare professional may discuss home care, prescribe medication when clinically appropriate, recommend testing, arrange follow-up, or direct you to in-person care.

A prescription or specific treatment is never guaranteed.

Prepare Before Joining

Have your Medicaid card, photo identification, medication list, allergies, pharmacy information, recent test results, and PCP information available.

If possible, record your temperature and other relevant readings before the appointment. Use good lighting and keep the device steady, especially when showing a rash, swelling, redness, or another visible concern.

Do not attend the appointment while driving.

Prescriptions and Laboratory Services Are Separate

A covered virtual appointment does not automatically mean every prescription, laboratory test, imaging service, or follow-up appointment is also covered.

If medication is prescribed, confirm that your pharmacy accepts the plan and that the medication appears on the plan’s formulary.

If laboratory testing is ordered, verify the laboratory network, requested test, authorization rules, referral requirements, and possible member responsibility before completing non-emergency testing.

When Virtual Care Is Not Appropriate

Call 911 for severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures, severe allergic-reaction symptoms, major trauma, or another potentially life-threatening condition.

Do not wait for a virtual appointment when emergency symptoms are present.
